FranklinCovey(R) Offers Tips for Making and Keeping New Year's Resolutions - All Year Resolutions Are Goals With Deadlines

SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- It's that time of year again, when people take personal inventory of all they have achieved or failed to accomplish. For many, New Year's resolutions are set and then cast aside, often only a few days or weeks later.

"Part of the problem is that we think that by simply setting a few vague New Year's resolutions, behavior changes will miraculously happen," says Sean Covey, Vice President of Product Innovation at FranklinCovey and author of the best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, which has sold more than two million copies worldwide. "Before setting New Year's resolutions, people should clearly identify the things in life that are most important to them, both personally and professionally, and then live each week and day accordingly."

Covey believes the solution to the New Year's resolution dilemma is to take one small step at a time toward accomplishing resolutions or goals through weekly and daily planning. He suggests that people: (1) take the opportunity to briefly review long and short-term goals they have identified (2) prioritize the necessary tasks associated with those goals that need to be accomplished on a weekly and daily basis (3) track personal progress in writing, by recording resolutions and goals in a time management tool, such as a paper planner or handheld device (4) review those resolutions or goals often, weekly and daily.

"By following a few simple suggestions, people can avoid the end-of-the- year guilt and disappointment that results from the gap between what they say they really value and what they actually do with their time," says Covey. "They don't need to feel so much guilt around making and breaking New Year's resolutions every year, when they are simply setting goals they can accomplish, if they plan and stay focused."

FranklinCovey, an effectiveness training and productivity tools firm and recognized expert in time and life management, offers the following time tips to help people reach their goals throughout the year 2004 and find fulfillment and peace of mind:

FranklinCovey Tips for Making and Keeping New Year's Resolutions - All Year

-- Don't dwell on what you didn't accomplish in the past. Focus your
energy and talents on the present and your goals for the future.
Don't allow guilt to damper your efforts to set and reach new goals.
Resolutions are simply goals with deadlines.

-- Write a mission statement and connect with it regularly. Write a
personal mission statement that reflects what you personally value and
the purpose of your life. Review it often, keeping long-term goals in
mind. Commit to not sacrifice what you want most in life for what you
want now.

-- Write down your short-term and long-term goals. Record goals in a
planner, handheld device, or whatever time management system you
prefer. A goal that is written and reviewed weekly and daily has a
greater chance of being achieved.

-- Use one integrated time management system. Keep important work and
family information, such as goals, tasks, appointments, contacts, etc.
in one, integrated time management system, such as a planner or
handheld device, so that retrieval and entry is easy and available.

-- Always carry a time management tool with you. Always carry your
planner, handheld device or time management tool with you to write and
review goals and tasks and to schedule appointments, readily access
addresses and telephone numbers, and organize information for quick
reference. Being organized is helpful in achieving goals.

-- Plan in solitude for 20 minutes each week, listing your three most
important goals and tasks for the week. Plan for 20 minutes each week
before your week begins, writing down your top three most important
goals and associated tasks, Share your top goals, appointments, and
tasks with family and co-workers, so they know what you are planning
to accomplish.

-- Plan in solitude for 10 minutes each day, listing your top three most
important goals tasks for the day. Plan for 10 minutes daily, before
your day begins, writing down your top three most important goals and
associated tasks. Stay focused on completing these top goals and
tasks. If you completed only these, think of what you will have
accomplished. Add and prioritize other goals and tasks, as you
complete those listed.

-- Review your week and reward yourself. On a weekly basis, review how,
on what, and with whom you spent your time to see how you are
accomplishing your goals. When you accomplish a certain goal or task
that is difficult, celebrate.

-- Keep promises to yourself. If you can make and keep promises to
yourself first, you will improve on keeping promises to others.
Exercise your self-discipline muscle.

-- Have integrity in the moment of choice. When you must choose how, on
what, and with whom to spend your valuable time, be proactive instead
of reactive. Make choices that are congruent with your mission,
values, and most important goals. Stay focused on the most important
things you can do to accomplish your goals.

-- Learn to say "no." When interrupted by a completing opportunity that
would pull you from your focus on achieving your most important goals
and tasks, ask yourself, "What is the wisest and best use of my time
right now?" If any given opportunity does not meet criteria, say "no"
to the opportunity.

-- Create life balance with boundaries between work and home. Work hard
at work, but know when to go home. When you are at home "be" at home.
People who are balanced thrive more in both environments.

-- Renew yourself. Take time to renew yourself physically (exercise),
mentally (be involved in continuous learning), emotionally (focus on
personal relationships), and spiritually (connect with nature, serve
others). You can't give to others, if you haven't replenished
yourself.

-- Find a mentor/coach. Invite a work associate, family member, or
friend to be your personal champion, mentor, and coach you in helping
you to achieve your top. Being accountable to someone else can help
you to achieve your goals, especially when the goals are difficult and
you need encouragement.

FranklinCovey Announces Fourth Consecutive Quarter of Operating Improvements, Fourth Quarter and Fiscal 2003 Year-End Operating Results, Fiscal 2004 Outlook
SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/

FranklinCovey (NYSE: FC) today announced financial results for its fourth quarter and year ended August 31, 2003, and its outlook for fiscal 2004. For the fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003, the Company reported an $18.1 million improvement in its operating results, reducing its loss from operations to $15.7 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003 compared to a loss from operations of $33.8 million for the comparable quarter of the prior year. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of significant year-over-year improvements in its operating results. The $18.1 million improvement in operating results of the quarter compared to the comparable quarter of last year is comprised of the following: (1) a $7.3 million decline in sales, partially offset by gross margin improvement (55.1% compared to 54.0%) resulting in a net $3.2 million year-over-year decline in gross profit, (2) a $5.9 million improvement in selling, general and administrative costs (including $3.4 million of retail store closing costs), (3) a $5.0 million improvement in depreciation and amortization expense, and (4) a $10.4 million improvement in reserves and impairment charges.

For the year ended August 31, 2003, the Company reported a $74.9 million improvement in operating results with a loss from operations of $47.7 million compared to a $122.6 million loss from operation for the fiscal 2002. The $74.9 million improvement in operating results for fiscal 2003 compared to fiscal 2002 is comprised of the following: (1) a $25.8 million decline in sales resulting in a net $14.1 million year-over-year decline in gross profit, (2) a $33.6 million improvement in selling, general and administrative costs (including $3.6 million of retail store closing costs), (3) an $8.2 million improvement of depreciation and amortization expense, and (4) a $47.2 million decline in reserves and impairment charges.

FranklinCovey also reported an improved net loss of $13.5 million before preferred stock dividends ($0.78 per common share loss, after accounting for preferred stock dividends) for the fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003 compared to a $36.9 million net loss before preferred stock dividends ($1.96 per common share loss, after accounting for preferred stock dividends) for the same quarter of the prior year. For the fiscal year ended August 31, 2003, the Company reported an improved net loss of $45.3 million before preferred stock dividends ($2.69 loss per common share, after accounting for preferred stock dividends) compared to a net loss of $100.6 million before preferred stock dividends ($5.49 loss per common share, after accounting for preferred dividends) for the prior fiscal year. The net loss for fiscal 2002 included a $25.7 million tax benefit, a $64.9 million net gain on the sale of discontinued operations and a $61.4 million charge from a cumulative change in accounting principle. The Company provided the following details underlying the continued improvement of operating results during the fourth quarter and during the full year of fiscal 2003.

Stabilizing revenues: Total sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003 declined $7.3 million, or 10%, as compared to last year's fourth quarter. As a result of the Company's fiscal calendar, the fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003 had six fewer business days (or 7% fewer business days) as compared to the same quarter of fiscal 2002. Sales from the Consumer Business Unit (CBU) for the fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003 (also with 7% fewer business days) declined 11% to $38.9 million compared to $43.8 million for the same quarter last year. Included in CBU revenues are retail store sales, which declined 13% (14% comparable store sales decline) for the fourth quarter, primarily reflecting a 9% decline in store traffic. Sales of new products that were introduced into the Target channel and the new superstores alliance helped to stabilize CBU sales and are reported in other CBU sales. Other CBU sales grew 17% to $6.4 million compared to $5.5 million for the same quarter last year. Organizational Solutions Business Unit (OSBU) sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003 (with 7% fewer business days) were $28.0 million, an 8% decline compared to $30.4 million for the same quarter last year and were impacted by the continued economic weakness in the training industry. The Company expects OSBU sales to improve as the general economy strengthens, corporate clients again begin to fund their training budgets and the Company's new offerings continue to gain traction.

Sales for fiscal 2003, were $307.2 million compared to $333.0 million for fiscal 2002. Sales for the year ended August 31, 2003, included $192.2 million and $115.0 million from CBU and OSBU, compared to $209.6 million and $123.4 million for the same period last year, respectively.

Selling, general and administrative expenses: Selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A) declined by $5.9 million for the fourth quarter ended August 31, 2003, compared to last year's fourth quarter. SG&A declined by $33.6 million for fiscal 2003, compared to fiscal 2002. The Company closed 22 of its domestic retail stores and another 10 of its international retail stores during fiscal 2003, and intends to close additional stores during fiscal 2004. These closures are comprised primarily of unprofitable stores and stores located in markets where the Company has multiple retail operations. As a result of the store closures during fiscal 2003, the Company incurred $3.6 million of costs related to lease buy-outs, severance and other closing costs, which were included in SG&A and expects to incur smaller but similar costs during fiscal 2004. The Company may also close additional retail store locations if future analysis demonstrates that operating performance may be improved through further retail store closures. With the annualized impact of implemented cost reductions and on-going cost-cutting initiatives, the Company expects the year over year decreases in SG&A to continue into fiscal 2004, even after including future store closing costs.

Depreciation and amortization: Depreciation and amortization expenses (D&A) continued to decline during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003, reflecting lower, more focused and better-managed capital expenditures and the effect of certain assets becoming fully depreciated. The Company reported declines of $5.0 million and $8.2 million in D&A during the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended August 31, 2003 compared to the same periods of the prior year. D&A include $5.0 million in impairment charges in fiscal 2003 and $1.0 million in fiscal 2002 on assets of certain retail stores that were closed or are expected to be closed. The Company expects D&A to further decline in fiscal 2004 as a result of the lower capital expenditures, store closures and other assets that will become fully depreciated during fiscal 2004.

Loan loss reserves and impairments: Operating results for the fourth quarter also included a $0.2 million addition to the management stock loan loss reserve compared to a $6.1 million addition to this reserve during the same quarter of last year. For fiscal 2003, charges for loan loss reserves and impaired assets decreased by $20.9 million and $26.4 million, respectively, compared to the same period of the prior year.

Liquidity: The Company had $41.9 million in cash and cash equivalents at August 31, 2003, compared to $47.0 million at August 31, 2002. With revenue declines continuing to narrow, cost reductions in SG&A and D&A expected to continue, and minimal long-term debt, the Company believes it is well positioned to improve its operating performance in fiscal 2004.

Fiscal 2004 Outlook

FranklinCovey also discussed current trends that show its revenue and cost reduction initiatives are beginning to bear fruit. The Company expects revenues to continue to stabilize during fiscal 2004 due to better operations in both of its business units. The Company also expects to report significantly improved operating results during fiscal 2004, reflecting stabilized revenues and continued reductions in operating costs.

Other Announcements

The Company also announced January 9, 2004, as the date for its Annual Shareholders Meeting. Proxy materials and the annual report will be mailed to shareholders of record as of November 21, 2003, on approximately December 12, 2003.

FranklinCovey(R) and Frommer's(R) Travel Guides Announce Their Top Ten Planning Tips for Travelers and Launch New Travel Planner and 'Travel Plans' Supplement
'Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages' and 'Travel Plans' Supplement Makes

Business and Vacation Travel Less Stressful
SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With the busy travel season quickly approaching, FranklinCovey(R), a global firm providing training and tools to assist individuals and organizations in measurably increasing their productivity and effectiveness, and Frommer's(R), publisher of best-selling travel guides, today announced their Planning Tips for Travelers, in conjunction with the launch of the new "Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages" and new "Travel Plans" supplement. These planning tips are useful for travelers of all experience levels and can be utilized for both business and vacation travel.

Often travelers are so worried about planning the details of their trip that they are unable to focus and execute on their organizations' most important priorities if they are traveling for business, or are unable to relax and enjoy themselves if they are traveling for pleasure. The following travel planning tips simplify a trip, giving the traveler the ability to plan, organize and take control of his or her business trip or vacation. FranklinCovey and Frommer's Planning Tips for Travelers include:

* Create a travel plans checklist. This checklist brings into
perspective all the small things that go into planning a business trip
or getaway. Check off each item as you go -- everything from finding
someone to watch your pet to packing the necessary items for your
trip.
* Prepare a budget and log expenses. This includes knowing how much you
have to spend on expenses such as airfare, hotels, rental cars, meals,
and ground transportation. Keep a log of all expenses and receipts so
you don't exceed budget and so it is easy to receive an expense
reimbursement when traveling for business.
* Book airfare, hotels, train travel, and rental cars in advance.
Booking these items well in advance can not only save money, but also
alleviate last minute aggravation in having flights and rooms sold
out. Planning in advance offers more financial benefits, and personal
options.
* Create a daily itinerary. Have a day-to-day view of your travel
plans, so you can organize, prioritize, and accomplish daily goals for
the trip. Write down the names of the people with whom you have
appointments or would like to visit, the activities in which you want
to participate, and the sites you want to see on your trip.
* Minimize luggage hassles. Check with the airline you will be
traveling with about luggage restrictions. In addition, it is a good
idea to pack a regulation size carry-on bag with a single change of
clothes and prescription medications, in case your luggage is lost.
If possible, try to book nonstop flights to prevent luggage from
getting lost during plane changes. Always tag luggage with proper
identification, using brightly colored tags to avoid luggage mix-up.
Use luggage with wheels to avoid back and shoulder discomfort.
* Pack luggage sensibly. Pack so you can easily repack if you are
pulled aside for a random security check. Fold clothes in overlapping
layers so they cushion each other. Roll clothes to save room. Bring
wrinkle-free clothing. Seal toiletries in resealable plastic bags.
Pack accessories on sides of your luggage, placing socks in shoes,
shoes in plastic bags, and toiletries on the top edge of your suitcase
near the handle to avoid damage.
* Have all of your travel information in one place. Review your travel
plans and place them in one, easy to access mobile place. This
information should include travel itineraries, lodging information,
car rental reservations, contact information, and your daily schedule.
* Make plans at your place of employment for your absence, regardless if
the trip is for business or pleasure. Plans such as setting your
e-mail to out of office auto reply, creating an extended absence
greeting on voice mail, and leaving instructions for the completion of
projects in your absence are examples of the tasks that need to be
completed before leaving the office.
* Dress for traveling in comfort. Dress sensibly for traveling. Wear
layers of comfortable clothes, as the climate in airplane cabins is
unpredictable. Take a sweater or jacket to put on or take off as the
on-board temperature dictates. Choose comfortable shoes, since legs
and feet tend to swell during air travel. You will also appreciate
them when walking long distances through airport terminals.
* Plan in advance to avoid jet lag. If you are crossing several time
zones, drink an ample amount of water before, during and after your
flight. Experts recommend drinking at least two 8-ounce glasses just
before departure and 1 liter for every hour you spend in the air-in
addition to beverages you drink with meals. Remember to adopt the
hour of the time zone you're traveling to by setting your watch and
starting to think according to the new time zone. Book travel to
accommodate arriving at a reasonable hour to get a good night's sleep.

In addition to these tips, FranklinCovey has also introduced the new "Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages" to make travel planning easier. Now available at more than 150 FranklinCovey retail stores, in the FranklinCovey catalog, and at www.franklincovey.com , the "Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages" is a daily planner with travel photos and facts featuring some of the world's most exotic destinations. The planner includes 12 months of planning pages, two-pages-per-day with full-color imagery from Frommer's 52 "favorite places" (one image per week). Additionally, a different destination-specific tip or information is included on each daily spread, which has been provided by Frommer's. A special content-rich back-end section features helpful and interesting tips, advice, insight, and travel recommendations from the experts at Frommer's.

"We are thrilled to offer our customers another great productivity tool that enables them to get things done that are most important to them, while utilizing valuable travel tips and advice from Frommer's, the best-selling travel guide expert in the world," said Kent Frogley, Vice President, FranklinCovey Corporate Marketing and Communications.

Like other FranklinCovey Planners, the "Frommer' Favorite Places Planning Pages" are filled with FranklinCovey's world-renowned content, training and forms to help individuals focus on goals based upon values, mission and roles. In addition to the "Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages," FranklinCovey has also introduced the new "Frommer's Travel Plans" supplement which helps travelers plan time away from home with ease and efficiency. The supplement includes nine different forms to use when planning your business trip or vacation: Travel Plans Checklist; Making Dollars & Sense of It; Choosing an Airline; Booking Your Train Travel; Choosing a Rental Car; Choosing Your Lodging; Places to Go, People to See, Things to Do; Travel Plans Summary, and Daily Itinerary. The "Frommer's Favorite Places Planning Pages" are developed around FranklinCovey's world-renowned FOCUS: Achieving Your Highest Priorities time management and productivity curriculum, in which more than 20,000 professionals are trained each month. The planner is based upon the FranklinCovey Planning System principles practiced by more than six million people around the world and is available in both a January 2004 and July 2004 start date in classic size (5 1/2" x 8 1/2" pages: $39.95) and in compact size (4 1/4" x 6 3/4" pages: $38.95). The "Frommer's Travel Plans" supplement is available in classic size for $5.95 and in compact size for $5.75.

FranklinCovey also offers binders which hold FranklinCovey planning pages that are priced from $29 to $250, and business totes and cases that hold laptops, handhelds, cell phones and other accessories that are priced from $79 to $250. Various styles, colors and sizes are available according to personal preference.

The first Frommer's travel guide, Europe on $5 a Day, published in 1957, taught Americans that they could afford to travel, and ushered in the age of modern tourism. In the 46 years since, Frommer's has developed a major Web presence ( www.frommers.com ), and more than a dozen travel lines for every type of traveler, from budget to deluxe, but the series remains faithful to its original mission -- to make travel a time of adventure and self-discovery.

Plugging Productivity Power Into Microsoft® Outlook® With PlanPlus™

Executive Summary
Implementing PlanPlus for Microsoft Outlook software at Ameren has enabled some employees to manage their time more productively, focus on what's important to the company, and bring more control and peace of mind to their work environment and their personal lives.

"With PlanPlus, we feel we've finally found a product that will work in our environment to help our employees become more organized and effective."
– Christa Grosser, Training Specialist,
Organization Effectiveness Department, Ameren

"Time management is an individual thing, and PlanPlus really meets my needs."
– Anne Offner, Org. Development Specialist,
Organizational and Leadership Development, Ameren

Using Technology to Focus

When Training Specialist Christa Grosser of Ameren's Organization Effectiveness Department first heard about FranklinCovey's PlanPlus software, she was excited. She learned that PlanPlus is an exclusive add-on tool that seamlessly integrates FranklinCovey's proven planning and time-management processes within Outlook's standard scheduling and e-mail environment.

"Because Microsoft Outlook used so widely at Ameren, I wanted to offer a time-management extension to the software to help employees sharpen their focus on top priorities while creating balance in their professional and personal lives," Grosser said.

Ameren is an energy-services company that serves 1.7 million electric customers and 500,000 natural-gas customers in a 49,000-square-mile area of Missouri and Illinois. The company owns a diverse mix of electric generating plants in its Midwest market with a capacity of more than 14,500 megawatts.

PlanPlus encourages employees to create and practice the habit of proactive planning. It increases employee productivity and effectiveness by keeping employees on track with their organization's "big picture" goals while also helping them successfully manage all of their daily tasks and commitments.

Training to Complement PlanPlus

In February 2003, Grosser met with Ameren's IT team to determine if PlanPlus would be compatible with the company's technology architecture. Initial testing proved that it was. In early 2003, PlanPlus was installed on 35 PCs (with installations continuing to grow), and Grosser kicked off the FranklinCovey training component.

PlanPlus Home View
The PlanPlus Home view brings three most frequently used Outlook tools into one convenient view-calendar, e-mail, and task list.

Before training began, Grosser was concerned about the many employees in her company who use PDAs (Palm® handhelds or Pocket PCs) in conjunction with Outlook as their primary planning-and-scheduling tool. When she learned that key PlanPlus data syncs to most PDAs, Grosser knew she had a digital solution that would fit nicely.

"What we're finding is that most of our employees are using some type of PDA, yet we couldn't find an integrated planning platform that met their needs. With PlanPlus, we feel we've finally found a product that will work in our environment to help our employees become more organized and effective."

Grosser scheduled employees for one-hour orientation sessions on PlanPlus followed by the new one-day workshop FOCUS: Achieving Your Highest Priorities.

Concerning the one-hour PlanPlus sessions, Grosser said, "They were definitely helpful. At first, some of our IT gurus were skeptical that PlanPlus added any value to Outlook. But when they learned about the time-management and personal-organization benefits, they were very impressed."

Employees also experienced the one-day Focus workshop, which teaches participants how to:

Lead a balanced and fulfilling life through proven time-management and planning methods.
Reduce stress by recognizing and eliminating low-priority activities and distractions.
Gain control of the competing demands on their time-e-mail, voice mail, meetings, and interruptions.
Use PlanPlus software to plan and achieve professional and personal goals-all from within Microsoft Outlook.
Day-to-Day Benefits of PlanPlus

Sharon Allen is a 19-year veteran of Ameren and one of five team members in the company's Alternate Retail Electric Suppliers (ARES) business center. She works with retail customers in Illinois and has been using PlanPlus for several months.

Regarding PlanPlus, she said, "I like how you can see everything in one view-your tasks, schedule for the day, and emails all at one time. I think that's very, very helpful. Plus, it's nice to be able to drag and drop tasks into your task list and track them."

Allen added, "I also use PlanPlus to track when monthly reports are due. I produce a department report each month, and I also have to file monthly reports with the Illinois Commerce Commission. I track when those reports are due and set them up as recurring monthly activities with PlanPlus."

Anne Offner, Organization Development Specialist at Ameren who holds a doctorate in organizational psychology, works in organizational and leadership development corporate-wide. She's impressed with the versatility of PlanPlus and how she can customize it to support how she works day to day.

"Time management is an individual thing, and PlanPlus really meets my needs," Offner said. "My task load and the urgency of those tasks can vary from day to day. It's great to keep a running task list visible because something that may be low-priority this week might be higher next month and I can devote some proactive attention to it in advance."

Up and Running in No Time

Goals Wizard
Interactive wizards engage and teach users how to effectively use tools such as goal setting, developing a mission statement, weekly planning within PlanPlus.

For any company installing new software, ease of installation and deployment to employees ranks pretty high on the technical-needs list. For Sharon Harness, Information Technology Specialist at Ameren, this was a high priority as well. Since Ameren has a standard system for deploying software to their personnel, Harness wanted to follow existing protocol. She was impressed at how easily and quickly PlanPlus installation and deployment fit within their current system. The first step was a simple process of creating the PlanPlus install "package." Next, this PlanPlus package was added to their standard "software mall" and made available to their employees. Finally, each employee simply selected PlanPlus from the "software mall," and it automatically installed on their local computer.

"Once we created the package, installing PlanPlus was a simple task," Harness said. "The installation ran smoothly, including support for handhelds such as Palm and Pocket PC devices."

"What I like about implementing PlanPlus is that you don't really have to do anything but install it and start using immediately," added Grosser. "For those people who are keeping their calendar and scheduling tasks and events electronically, PlanPlus is the best I've seen for the digital user." Grosser concluded, "If you want to have tools and knowledge to be a more effective employee and individual, to create balance in your life, to have a way to manage that life at work and outside work, then the content and materials of the Focus workshop will help you do that, and PlanPlus is the application tool to help you manage it all effectively."
